Buddhism provides a means by which human beings can realise their full potential. Any human being with enough energy, idealism and willingness to change can also gain enlightenment. Buddhism is a path of infinite growth which places our spiritual growth in our own hands. The central insight of the Buddha was into the nature of existence. Everything including ourselves, is a constantly changing process. Our bodies are subject to illness and ageing and we all die. Of course, we would not deny any of this intellectually, but we act as if it were not so. And hence we suffer. We crave and cling to things, people, situations looking for permanence in the impermanent, for eternal in the transitory. To see things as they really are is to be free. With this freedom comes boundless energy, compassion and wisdom; unshakeable bliss and equanimity. The Buddhist path begins with ethics, with acting from states of mind that are based on love generosity and awareness. Meditation helps to develop these positive mental states and to further integrate our heights and depths. |
