The Wellington Buddhist Centre is part of a world-wide Buddhist movement called the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO).

The FWBO was founded in 1967 by Urgyen Sangharakshita, an Englishman who spent 20 years in India as a Buddhist monk. There he studied, practiced and had contact with the main schools of traditional Buddhism.

He returned to the West with a clear awareness that although the essence remains the same, Buddhism must always express itself anew in each age and culture; and so he established a new Buddhist movement, the FWBO.

The FWBO is not aligned to any one school of Buddhism but draws inspiration from all traditions.
